Chapter 11: IS in Business

Craig Gentry, a young man doing an internship for IBM was sitting in a cafe one day and discovered something he had pondered on for quite some time, a breakthrough in encryption. This breakthrough would totally change the way security via the web is handled. Consumers private information would be protected in unprecedented ways. This would definitely increase sales and businesses that deal in e-business will begin to see substantial gains in revenues thanks to this new cryptology. It hasn't been implemented yet, but will be looked at very closely in the months to come. The system developement life cycle of this new breakthrough is going to be very intersting with its complex applications to the vast amounts of affecs it will impose on the way business is done over the internet.

Chapter 10: IS in Business

Google investors spoke with a disgruntled Craigslist stake holder who owns about 28% of the shares. Officials at Google were only interested in purchasing the shares from this unnamed share holder if they can gain control of the way Craigslist was operated. Of course, they were unable to do just that especially with the creator of Craigslist Craig Newmark stating that Google would not comply with Craigslists community views. The success of Ebay and now Craigslist showing no signs of wear are thriving in an era of e-business its a perfect time to capitalize on the market. I relate this story to ERP, in which the major role players involved have to evaluate to risk and ROI making a purchase of this stature would impose on the investment.

Chapter 9: IS in Business

The Government Accountability Office said the Federal Communications Commission needs to ramp up oversight in the wireless industry and do a better job at ensuring the consumers are protected under the law. With more focused attention on the wireless cell phone industry due to the capabilities cell phones offer nowadays and also with the rise in texting and social networking capabilities from the palm of your hand, sales and concern are up. The question is have cell phone companies been getting away with being allowed to charge outrageous fees for canceling a cell phone line or adding certain upgrades to each plan. Whatever the case may be, the government is stepping in to ensure to consumers that they are aware of the mass amounts of complaints that comes through their mail describing of this soc called highway robbery that's going on under their nose. This form of business intelligence will allow for the government to analyze data received by the companies involved and make a decision as to if there is any fowl play going on. Many people are unhappy with the way these companies are conducting business and feel their getting cheated.

Chapter 8: IS in Business

Apple is making headlines again. Their fiscal fourth quarter report was up 47% compared to Wall Street's expectations. The company had substantial amounts of sales with both their MAC Pcs and Iphones. Apple obviously has strong production and operation management implemented in the way their business is ran. With their detailed strategic planning of how to get the product(s) to the consumer is turning out to be a very effective way. The company's put a lot of thought in how to distinguish themselves as a superior company by coming up with unique and innovative technology which in return, has created a lot of capital for the business and allowed it to rise agaist its competitors. Apple will have to demonstrate the same ambition and strive to rise against the competitors if it wants to be a key factor in the future.

Chapter 7: IS in Business

An MIT program designated to find inovated ways to capitalize on cell phone abilities has a very interesting vision on maximizing a cell phones capabilities by allowing health workers to take pictures of x-rays and transport the screenshot along with data over seas for a much faster response time. A non-profit organization by the name of Moca, created this particular software and decided to use cell phones because they are inexpensive, personal, connected and everywhere. Their main focus was to create health care access in less wealthy countries. Cellphones are becoming computers and with new technology going as fast as it is there's no telling what else could come of this to help benefit the less fortunate areas of the world.

Cell phones will ultimately get cheaper with time and their capabilities are going to be highly advanced. This type of sotware and technology can not only save many lives but open the doors to future innovations that will effect all countries.

Chapter 6: IS in Business

The Federal Communications Commission has a bill in the works to provide affordable broadband service to all, which its expected costs range from 20 billion to 350 billion dollars. Its said that 3-6 million americans do not recieve high speed internet and don't have the helpful resources that the majority already have. I beleive the Internet has its pro's and con's like everything else but, the Internet is vital resource for any individual whether using it for information, a business, student etc. We live in a predominately fast paced society where large amounts of information are a hand click away from your viwing pleasure.
I correlated this article with the Database Management System part which explains in detail how information on the Internet works, how its maintained and updated. From a business standpoint, it would make a business more viable in terms of effciency and allow the firms to minimize human error by being able to double check any type of information within a matter of seconds.

Chapter 5: IS in Business

Microsoft has opened there 550,00 square foot data center in Dublin. The company will run cloud services from the center for consumers, businesses and developers. The database will be able to run applications such as Microsoft's Live Search formerly Hotmail as well as other Microsoft designed software. Businesses will have the option to subscribe to a wide array of hosted applications and server space. The new facility will also host Microsoft's Azure platform which allows developers to host and manage web based applications.

From a business standpoint the location for the new data center was well thought out. Dublin has a relatively cool climate and great internet connectivity. Data centers need to be kept cool by some sort of cooling system which take up the predominate costs to have one open, but for the new data center they'll be able to maintain its coolness 95% of the time just by the climate and using the natural air outside. This should cut operating costs dramatically and save the company a lot of money which means more net income for the business.

With Microsoft's vision of the capacty planning for such a center and the scalability the business promotes ensures that the business understands that in order to stay at the top of the ladder they must adjust to present and future demands from consumers, businesses and developers.
